AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

India is considered as a land of festivals. The project focuses on one of the well-known festival of India that is Makar Sankranti falls on 14th January. It has both seasonal and religious significance. Kite flying is a big part of the celebration of Makar Sankranti.

Overall, my MA project deals with festival and it’s effect on the environment. Qualitative research is carried out through journals, news articles, research paper and websites. Within the beauty of colourful flying kites, tradition, pleasant and enthusiastic atmosphere, the project seeks to draw attention towards birds who are entangled into the strings and got injured and even lost their lives. The project aims to spread awareness about the glass coated strings used to fly kites instead of cotton threads. As a result, this project informs about the issue, will be helpful to save birds and encourages to make responsible decisions during the celebration.

I have designed total 7 Kites throughout my MA. Each kite represents illustrations in a narrative non-fiction form – depicting the scenario of birds during the festival, being caught in the strings, survival of birds (who are fortunate enough to live while others lost their lives) and promoting awareness to cautious about birds. People can easily able to communicate when these kites are set up or sold in kite markets or hung up in public spaces during festival time.

Digital Illustration – Awareness campaign about saving birds which are entangled into the harmful kite strings, while flying the kites at the time of festival (Makar Sankranti).

Traditional Indian kites are made from bamboo sticks and colourful tissue paper, so in the project, similar materials, structure and colours are used. These kites are screen printed and the Indian block print patterns are incorporated in the illustrations.

FLYER DESIGN

The folded flyer design is part of an awareness campaign that acts as a promotional tool. It will be distributed during the festival time and accessible to a wide range of audiences. I have highlighted the key messages in a concise way with the use of illustrations, different blocks of colours and folds that enhance the visual of the flyer and actively engage the reader.

BADGE DESIGN

I have designed a badge that is useful for the rescue team who work to save birds during festival time. Even, it is useful for those who are supporters and want to take initiative. I have represented the campaign’s message on the badge that helps to promote awareness. The badge is created in the shape of a kite.
